About Our Experiences
During our time in Sydney, we had the pleasure of exploring a wide range of bars and restaurants, immersing ourselves in the vibrant food and drink scene. With Tyler's firsthand experience from studying abroad at the University of New South Wales, coupled with Tim and my adventures during our visit in May 2023, we were able to discover some hidden gems as well as iconic establishments in the heart of the city.

Nestled slightly away from the bustling city hub, Nomad is indeed worth the additional travel. The impactful cuisine offered is grounded in the essence of local sources and the chefs’ culinary journey through Morocco, Spain, and the diverse landscapes of the Middle East.
At Nomad, savor the culinary delights from an a la carte selection or immerse in a gastronomical journey by opting for their well-crafted tasting menu. The tasting experience facilitates a shared culinary journey at your table, symbolic of a close-knit family meal.
We indulged in the a la carte selection, finding immense delight in the raw oysters, the spatchcock chicken, and the daily catch. These delights were perfectly complemented by a bottle of decadent Samuel’s Gorge shiraz, a unique wine sourced from McLaren Vale, Australia.. This wine region is known for some of the most distinctive wines in the world.
We were so engrossed in our experience that we did not capture any pictures! But, rest assured, you can get glimpse of the menu and the unique establishment on Nomad’s website.

Cucina Porto
Cucina Porto is a classic Italian restaurant located in The Star hotel. The location is very convenient if you’re staying at The Star, or if you’re in the Darling Harbour area. However, the view from the restaurant was a bit disappointing as it looks onto a bland hallway near The Star’s food court. If you need a bit more excitement, might we recommend The Star’s casino?
Although Cucina Porto didn’t have a comparable view to some of the other restaurants we went to, the rest of our dining experience more than made up for it. The menu included a solid variety of dishes such as pasta, seafood, meat, and pizza. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but the quality of food was well worth it.
What makes Cucina Porto unique is that their menu is heavily influenced by the childhood favorites of their Italian born chef, Martino Pulito. We got to experience this passion for food while trying their apple-cinnamon tart for dessert. Besides tasting amazing, they also left the recipe for the tart on the table so we could try to make it for ourselves at home.

Located at Circular Quay, Café Sydney offers a stunning vantage point to enjoy delectable Australian cuisine while gazing at the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Positioned on the rooftop of Customs House, this elevated restaurant allows guests to marvel at the picturesque views of Circular Quay.
Within their menu, Café Sydney presents an array of culinary delights, ranging from refreshing salads, succulent oysters, fresh seafood, and savory meat dishes to delectable small plates and vegan options. Complementing their diverse menu, they also boast an extensive selection of Australian wines available for purchase by the bottle or glass.

Whether for a casual lunch or a night out with friends, El Camino is a great spot for any occasion. Their crazy cheap deals and great party vibe are what makes this spot so special. They’re always playing good music and you get a free sombrero when being seated.
During the week you may find some insane deals that draw massive crowds, such as 10 cent wings on Wednesdays! If you’re feeling bold, order a margarita tower for the table!
El Camino Cantina is a Tex-Mex restaurant with great energy and even better deals! We initially ate at El Camino for a quick lunch, and even though it was a weekday at noon, we could feel the energy oozing out of the restaurant. There was great music playing, free sombreros for all customers, and even churros being given out in exchange for a 5-star review.
When exploring Sydney, there are numerous locations to choose from, including The Rocks. During our visit, we found ourselves at this particular spot. While reservations are not typically required for seating, it is worth noting that on busier nights, such as Wednesdays, you may encounter a short wait for an available table.
We specifically arrived on a Wednesday and made sure not to miss the 10 cent wing extravaganza. Despite the restaurant being packed, luck was on our side as we managed to secure one of the last tables without any delay. Donning our vibrant sombreros, we eagerly indulged in a substantial amount of deliciously affordable wings. To enhance the experience, we couldn't resist ordering a couple of margarita towers, adding the perfect finishing touch to our night.
While the wings and margaritas themselves were not particularly extraordinary, the irresistible deal made it worth our while. The lively atmosphere of the restaurant created an enjoyable evening for us overall.
Amici Cafe

We originally never intended on eating here, but after a sudden craving for Italian food while in the Darling Harbour area, we stumbled upon Caffe Amici.
The cafe is really easy to miss if you’re not looking hard for it, as there’s only one sign outside the small entrance. Its interior wasn’t anything special either as they only had around ten tables all closely packed together, with a direct view into the kitchen.
We ordered some Italian classics: red wine, lasagna, and fettuccine bolognese. Our food arrived pretty quickly, and upon our first bites we knew we had something special. The food tasted great and exactly what we wanted.
We had a great meal and even talked to our waiter for a bit before we left. We found out that the cafe operates with only 2 employees, the cook and the waiter. We could just tell they were passionate about their work, and we would highly recommend coming to Caffe Amici if you’re looking for a classic and delicious Italian meal while in Sydney.

During my visit to Bondi Trattoria, I had the pleasure of arriving at the restaurant when it opened for dinner at 5:00pm. The food was absolutely exquisite, and what truly stood out was the warm and efficient service provided by the staff. Throughout my meal, friendly interactions with the staff made me feel right at home, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to my dining experience. I was so impressed with the delicious cuisine that I am already planning my next visit to Bondi Trattoria.

The Opera Bar is busy all afternoon and evening, particularly on the weekends. Our favorite time to be here is late afternoon, just as the sun begins its descent. For the best experience, book a table in advance.

Perhaps the most iconic mixology hub in Australia, Maybe Sammy has consistently found its name on the World’s 50 Best Bars list from 2019 through to 2023.
Boasting aesthetic influences from the 1950’s, an array of inventive drinks, and theatrical bartenders, this venue should be a priority on your itinerary.
Shortly after queuing for a bit, Tim and I were escorted to the prime viewing spot in the house - our bar seats. From here, we gleefully observed the masterful bartenders in full swing. The cocktail book handed to us was nothing short of a star-studded, diva-themed directory, although the motifs and menu offerings shift periodically.
Prepare yourself for an extended visit as the extensive and innovative drinks menu makes for a challenging choice. If the opportunity arises, request bar seating – the chance to engage with the spirited bartenders is a standout experience at Maybe Sammy.

During our memorable visit, we had the pleasure of sampling a variety of exceptionally crafted cocktails, each one leaving a lasting impression. We strongly encourage you to make Reservations ahead of time. This particular bar is the priciest one we've encountered in Sydney, setting a $75 base fee per individual. Prepare to spend around $25 for each cocktail you consume. Two cocktails and a petite bite later, one easily hits the $75 threshold. Most noteworthy, wine lovers can anticipate spending anywhere from $100 to an astonishing $15,000 or more on a bottle.
For an expanded memorable dining adventure, consider experiencing a meal at Oncore by Clare Smyth located conveniently next door. This eatery is run by acclaimed British female chef Clare Smyth, the first from her country to earn three Michelin stars. As one of the city's major destinations for fine dining, it's not uncommon for reservations to be filled several months in advance.

The Glenmore is a restaurant & bar that is sure to bring guests every night of the week.
The restaurant is spread across three floors of the building and the main draw is the view from the rooftop bar on the top floor. You get an incredible shot of the Opera House, Circular Quay, and if you’re lucky you can see the partygoers at Argyle on a Friday night.
The Glenmore was one of our favorite drinking spots in Sydney. Besides being conveniently located in the heart of The Rocks neighborhood, what makes The Glenmore special is its three distinct floors that all add a magical touch to the place.
The first level is a classic bar with countless beers on tap and some decent outdoor seating options. This area also acts as their public restaurant space which includes a small food menu. The second floor gets a bit more interesting as it includes a snazzy cocktail bar with some luxurious rooms inspired by 1920s Hollywood. These rooms are mostly used for private dining events and are available for reservation.
The third level is what really makes The Glenmore unique. It includes a rooftop bar that has one of the best views of the Opera House in all of Sydney. The rooftop was decorated beautifully and just had a certain charm about it that we couldn’t resist.

During our exploration of Sydney, we received multiple recommendations for Apollonia from the local bartenders.
Nestled in the vibrant Circular Quay area, this bar stood out as its entrance was easily accessible compared to other bars we visited.
Apollonia may be compact, but its interior is adorned with a tasteful Italian ambiance, complete with a distinctive marble bar. We were able to witness the skillful mixology of their talented bartenders through the generous reflection provided by a ceiling mirror.
True to their Godfather-inspired theme, the highlight of their menu is the Apollonia Negroni, prominently positioned at the top. Our expectations were met as we savored the impeccable taste of our negronis. If negronis don't tempt your palate, fear not, as Apollonia offers an extensive selection of cocktails and an impressive assortment of wines as well.
The Fortune of War Pub

The Fortune of War, established in 1828, holds the esteemed title of Sydney's oldest pub. Situated in the vibrant area of The Rocks, this bar boasts a captivating ambiance that perfectly matches its historical significance.
With an inviting outdoor seating area equipped with cozy heaters, visitors can comfortably enjoy the enchanting atmosphere even on chilly nights. However, the true highlight lies within the walls of their iconic bar.
During our recent visit, every seat at the bar was occupied, with the sounds of classic rock music and lively conversations permeating the air. In addition, a quaint cocktail lounge awaits eager guests on the floor above.
Indulging in a pint of beer seemed only fitting, and we were delighted to discover that the food offerings were equally impressive. For a delectable experience, we recommend trying their mouthwatering steak sandwich or The Fortune Burger. These delightful dishes perfectly complement a refreshing beer and are reasonably priced.
Furthermore, The Fortune of War regularly hosts live music performances, making it a vibrant spot on most nights. It's worth noting that reservations for the bar area are not accepted, so arriving early is advisable if you wish to secure a spot. For those seeking an authentic Australian bar imbued with rich history, this charming establishment serves as an ideal choice.
The Inn at Baxter

Baxter Inn
One of the best “hidden bars” within Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD), the Baxter Inn is a must-visit.
This underground whiskey bar has a warm, cozy atmosphere and an admiration for blues music. Their whiskey cocktails are what they’re known for, but they also have a great selection of both beer and wine. Grab a side of pretzels along with a drink. I don’t know what they do to them, but their pretzels are unbelievably tasty, making a perfect combo with a smoky whiskey drink in hand.
Finding the Baxter Inn is the fun part, and we recommend having this pinned on Google Maps. The path itself seems sketchy, but you’d be surprised at how safe this area is.
The entrance is located on a large, unmarked alley. You’ll find The Duke of Clarence next to it, which is a pub that gets great reviews. To your right, look for a door that seems like a fire escape. This is actually the entrance to the Baxter Inn. The challenge of finding a spot like this only adds to the fun!
The Lobo

Another fantastic hidden underground bar, the Lobo is one of the top bars within Sydney’s CBD for rum enthusiasts. Serving over 250 types of rum, you’re bound to find a drink that satisfies your thirst.
Order a rum flight to sample Lobo’s deep rum portfolio, or order one of their many signature rum cocktails. The bartenders love to put on a show, and the longer you stay here, the more drinks you’ll watch come ablaze in a fiery spectacle.
The Lobo is located near the Baxter Inn, but it is easier to find. You’ll find a marked entrance down a short hallway, step down the spiral staircase, and enter a Caribbean paradise. There’s a very strong Jamaican theme here, present within Lobo’s décor and drinks. While living in Sydney, this was the bar Tyler frequented the most.
The Abode: The Doss House

A hidden whiskey bar in The Rocks neighborhood? Say less.
When I think of drinking whiskey, I imagine myself sitting in a dark room with rustic décor, listening to 50’s music and smoking a cigar. Minus the cigar, that is the exact vibe that I’d use to describe The Doss House.
The Doss House has a breathtaking collection of whiskey, but that’s not all that makes this spot so special. Immerse yourself within the cozy atmosphere of this underground bar adorned with dim lighting, soothing melodies, and a small outdoor terrace. Grab a cocktail or enjoy a whiskey flight and soak in the magic of the Doss House.

Our Recommendations
If you want to dine with a view, we recommend Cafe Sydney. With a location on Circular Quay, dinner here is easy to work into your itinerary in Sydney. We had one of our best views in Sydney at Nomad, just be aware of its location in Surrey Hills, which is a short Uber ride from the CBD.
If you want good food without spending a lot of money, put Caffe Amici on your list.
For drinks with a view, it’s hard to beat the Opera Bar, but The Glenmore is nearby (in the Rocks). Our favorite bars are Maybe Sammy and Grain (Julie and Tim) and Doss House and the Lobo (Tyler and Tyler’s friend Adrien). We all loved the experience at Baxter Inn.
